Reading: Authors as Mentors unit: We did an author study on Mo Willems and identified the craft moves he uses in his books.  We used these to inspire us to be better writers.  Click on the picture to go to the post about this.

Reading: Introduced at the beginning of the year, this chart empowers my students who have always believed that they have to know how to read words in order to be deemed "readers".

Reading: Introduced when we begin using "book baggies" filled with "just right books".

Reading: As mentioned I would under the version of this poster in last year's collection (scroll down), I changed the title of this poster to read "Leader Readers" in the interest of getting away from using "good"(as doing the opposite would signify "bad"). Student-generated.

Reading: This poster is student-generated and identifies all of the reading "superpowers" we use to grow our "reading muscles".  Click on the picture to read the post about how I use this in the classroom.

Reading: Each table has a day to book shop in their "just right book baggies" (Two tables on Thursday since I have 6 table groups)

Reading: What partner reading looks and sounds like

Reading: stamina "thermometer" chart
Reading: We try to test our stamina every few weeks.

Writing: The writing process. This was what we'd learned about Small Moment Story components thus far

Reading: We use removable highlighter tape (mine is from Lakeshore Learning) to highlight the sight words we've learned (so far) during shared reading

Writing: Fall/Winter Small Moment Writing Process

Writing: watermelon/seed visual for small moment stories
Writing: March rubric/self-assessment showing the difference between 1, 2 and 3 star writing; Click on the picture to go to the post about this.

Writing: How-To Writing Process chart; Click on the picture to go to the post about this.

Writing: December self-assessment chart, student-generated

Writing: Where am I in the writing process?  Student moves his/her clothespin at the end of each writing time.

Literacy: Our reading and writing partner chart uses magnets so partnerships can be changed with ease as the year progresses.  My partners are clownfish and sea anemones, since they work together in nature. At the top, I highlight who gets to share first during "turn and talk" times each day. Choices include each animal as well as "your choice" with a picture where the clownfish is swimming out of a sea anemone.

Community: Student-generated classroom agreement (rules) from the first week is signed by everyone in the class

Organization: My large print schedule is a laminated sheet of butcher paper with velcro circles and laminated, velcro-backed sentence strips for easy changes

Behavior: This is what I say when I need my class's attention. They drop everything, freeze, look at me with voices off and hold up five fingers.  My teaching partner uses this verbiage to express her expectations on the rug.

2011-2012

Reading: reading with meaning; Punctuation (I used the book "Yo! Yes?" By Chris Raschka to create this chart with the kids)
Reading: Next year, I will head this with "Reader Leaders...", as I'm trying to get away from using the words Good and Bad since they are so abstract and I don't like the link to self-esteem
Writing: Students mark where they are in the writing process at the end of each writing time. 8 stages: think, plan, sketch, write, add details, check (proofread), edit, publish (fancy it up!)
Reading: Character study of Lilly, generated during 3 mini-lessons in which we read Lilly's Plastic Purple Purse, Julius Baby of the World, and Lilly's Big Day
Reading: Characters we have met.  Generated during a mini-lesson from student input, with an embarrassing drawing of Dr, King. ;)

Reading: Recording our thinking while we read

Reading: Non-Fiction books
Reading: 3 types of connections

Writing: All About Books, student-generated ideas

Writing: Student names on post-its are moved by them at the end of writing time to the writing step they are on
